Eduard Chekmenev: Research at University of Louisville, Louisville KY (1998-2003)

The primary area of my research in Kentucky was solid state NMR spectroscopy of crystalline peptide powders. Particularly, I was interested in 13Ca and 15N chemical shielding properties. They were measured for glycyl residues by Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) approach in a series of tripeptides. The results of this experimental research are applicable to protein structural studies.

The study of 17O chemical shielding and quadrupole coupling tensors in the solid state was another area of my interests. We focused on the accurate ab initio calculations of NMR properties and their dependence on intermolecular hydrogen bonding in crystalline a-oxalic acid. The results are very prommising for application of 17O as a sensitive probe for hydrogen bonding.
